Il est principalement utilisé comme indicateur d'eau et d'humidité.

Il est  utilisé également:

  • dans la composition d'encre invisible
  • comme standard de couleur
  • dans certains hygromètres
  • comme indicateur de température dans les actvités de broyage
  • en galvanoplastie
  • dans la peinture sur verre et sur porcelaine
  • pour la préparation de catalyseurs
  • dans les engrais et les additifs alimentaires
  • comme stabilisateurs de mousse dans la bière
  • comme absorbant pour les gaz toxiques militaires et l'ammoniac
  • pour la fabrication de la vitamine B12
