Le CIRC (2013) considère que l'exposition professionnelle aux bitumes obtenus par distillation et leurs émissions durant le pavage des routes est peut-être cancérigène pour l'homme (groupe 2B).
L'ACGIH (2010) classifie les fumées d'asphalte (bitume) comme substance non classifiable comme cancérogène pour l'homme (groupe A4); cependant la dernière révision date de 1999.
